While TikTok came <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/19\/24347280\/tiktok-ban-shutdown-ends\">back online<\/a> shortly after the ban, the app didn\u2019t return to either mobile store. Apple and Google are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/19\/24347325\/tiktok-service-providers-penalties-apple-google-orcale-trump\">at risk of paying billions in fines<\/a> if they make TikTok available, and it\u2019s unclear if President Donald Trump\u2019s executive order <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/20\/24348213\/trump-tiktok-ban-executive-order-sale-delay-china\">refusing to enforce the ban<\/a> actually removes that risk.<\/p>\n<p>Apple and Google haven\u2019t replied to multiple requests for comment from <em>The Verge<\/em> \u2014 including requests I made today \u2014 about if or when the app might be available again. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/121596\">Apple<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/19\/24347310\/tiktok-hasnt-returned-to-the-app-store-or-google-play-just-yet\">Google<\/a> do have statements about the removal of TikTok and other ByteDance-owned apps like Lemon8 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/19\/24347034\/marvel-snap-banned-tiktok-bytedance\"><em>Marvel Snap<\/em><\/a>, but otherwise, no comment since. <\/p>\n<p>TikTok didn\u2019t immediately reply to a request for comment, either, however, <em>Marvel Snap<\/em> developer Second Dinner <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/seconddinner\/status\/1882905320001089938\">posted Friday evening on X<\/a>, saying, \u201cOur current estimation is that Marvel Snap will be back in the app stores as early as next week barring any setbacks.\u201d Without explaining further, Second Dinner co-founder Ben Brode <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/benbrode.bsky.social\/post\/3lggxjuou7c2t\">answered a question on Bluesky<\/a> about what would happen for next month\u2019s updates, saying, \u201cwe\u2019re hoping to have it back before then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because these app stores are the primary way many people get the software, TikTok\u2019s absence basically means you can\u2019t newly install the app \u2014 at least, for the time being \u2014 without jumping through a lot of hoops. It also means they can\u2019t deliver updates to add new features or address any bugs, including potential security flaws.<\/p>\n<p>If you had TikTok on your phone before the ban kicked in, however, the app should work for you as normal. (As a result, people are trying to sell used phones with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/24\/24351185\/i-cant-believe-i-have-to-say-this\"> the TikTok app still on them<\/a>.)
